On the table is a big bottle of Heineken, a full glass of beer and a plate of snacks. Not sure what they’re trying to say. Is it their idea of drinking oneself under the table? Only to become the table? I’m flummoxed.
Sunday’s ad is for Heineken, from the 1950s or possibly very early 1960s. There Is Happiness In … features a very odd assortment of musicians either stuck inside Heineken bottles or perhaps just wearing them as costumes. You don’t often see a quartet consisting of trumpet, saxophone, tuba and drums, but maybe there are more of them outside the frame. Not sure about the Heineken part, but they certainly look festive and happy.
Friday’s ad is for Heineken, from 1951. I’ve always found this ad super creepy, but maybe it was effective, who knows. It certainly gives beer goggles a new angle, pint goggles, though I do like that the eye itself has become a drop of beer inside the glass looking out. And of course he’s wearing a bow tie.

Whereas in the second ad it’s a white one-piece suit. The woman almost appears the same in both, although in the first she has red hair, but in the second it appears more brown.
Thursday’s ad is for Heineken, from, I believe, the 1950s. I’m not really sure when the ad is from, but given the woman serving the man so subserviently, I’d have to say 1950s or very early 1960s. The tagline, “ook biy U thuis,” is essentially “also at home” or “also in your home” (thanks Martijn for the better translation).
Tuesday’s ad is another one for Heineken. I think it’s a fairly recent ad, but I’m really not sure, though I suspect it can’t be any older than the 1980s. It’s done in the style of pop artist Roy Lichtenstein, whose birthday is today. Showing a bottle of Heineken popping open, with his trademark comic book style, and a satisfying “pssst” as it opens.

It seems to be something like: “Be a man! Drink a glass of spicy Amstel Beer.” It’s a strange ad, showing an attractive woman holding up a glass of beer, almost taunting us with “be a man!” The proportions of the illustration, however, look a little off when you examine them closely, giving them more of a cartoon-like feel.
