Thursday’s ad if for the German beer Hackerbrau, which is the Hacker in Hacker-Pschorr. The ad is from around 1920, long before they merged again in 1972. The ad was illustrated by Ludwig Hohlwein , who did a number of beer ads during the same period of time.
Wednesday’s ad makes quite some bold claims. It appears to be a 19th century ad for the newly modernized Notting Hill Brewery Co., which had just started a “revolution in English Bottled Beer Produced Entirely on a New System.” I especially love the twin banners, that don’t quite seem to work together: “No Deposit” and “No Sediment.”
Tuesday’s ad is again for Drewery’s, and I believe it’s probably a still from an animated television commercial. It has the stylized look of the animation from that period of time. It must have been a fun commercial.
Monday’s ad is the 700th ad in this series! So I wanted to make it something special. This is a replica poster of the original 1516 Reinheitsgebot, one of history’s best marketing gimmicks. I’m not sure who it was created to promote, but it’s still a pretty cool piece of breweriana. Happy 700th.
Friday’s ad is again from perhaps the 1950s, a third one for the Indiana brewery Drewerys. It uses the slogan “more flavor, less filling, more fun!” THis one has a third different model making faces to express each idea. Hilarious, that’s Big D. Yet again.

Wednesday’s ad is again possibly from the 1950s, and is another ad for the Indiana brewery Drewerys. This one features a Canadian Mountie and the following confusing tagline. “Canada’s Pride Brand Since 1877 … A Product of U.S.A.”
Peter Rowe, the man behind the television show Dirty Jobs, has a new three-part series that debuts tonight: How Booze Built America. I suspect they’ll be playing fast and loose with much of beer’s history, but it should be at least an entertaining show. Check out the first episode on the Discovery channel. Monday’s ad is from 1890, and is for a German, or at least German-speaking, country. The text, “Heute Bock,” translates as “today bock.” I’ve no idea if the ad, undoubtedly a poster of some kind, is for any particular brewery. It looks hand-colored. My guess is it was from a book of some sort. At the top is §11, which here in the states that symbol § is generally used in legal writing for “section” but in Europe it means paragraph in the same way we use the pilcrow sign ¶. So this was likely the cover or title page for Paragraph 11 of something. Anybody got a better explanation, or know what it’s from?
