Beer In Ads #413: A Night On The Town

July 13, 2011 By Jay Brooks

Wednesday’s ad is for Miller high Life, from 1948, and shows a fancy party and a swanky restaurant with a spiffy view looking out and down on whatever city it’s supposed to be. And at the center of it all, the server is bringing a pilsner glass of Miller High Life.

Beer In Ads #400: Home Is Where The Miller Is

June 24, 2011 By Jay Brooks

Friday’s ad brings our Miller High Life week to a close. I’m not sure when the ad is from, but it’s a safe bet it was at least when needlepoint was popular. Although if my memory serves me, I think this is actually crewel. My mother, grandmother and several aunts were addicted to sewing and assorted needlework crafts. Still, I actually think it’s kinda cool — in a retro geeky way — but again that’s probably because I was around so much of it when I was a kid.

Beer In Ads #399: Quality Is Always In Good Taste

June 23, 2011 By Jay Brooks

Thursday’s ad is yet another one for Miller High Life, the Champagne of Bottle Beer, this one from 1956. This one seems less about sophistication, and more about a return to a simpler, down home, country lifestyle. But it looks like a set, and nothing like an actual home. It just seems odd. “Aren’t we quaint, we’ve got an old iron stove.”

Beer In Ads #397: Enjoy Life With Miller High Life!

June 22, 2011 By Jay Brooks

Wednesday’s ad is another one for Miller High Life, the Champagne of Bottle Beer, from 1948. Again, the attempt is to make it appear more sophisticated, as it’s served on a silver tray, with a garnish of an orchid and a handsome looking bottle opener resting on the tray, too. With that presentation, how could one not enjoy life?

Beer In Ads #396: Miller High Life Bowls

June 21, 2011 By Jay Brooks

Tuesday’s ad is for Miller High Life, the Champagne of Bottle Beer, but in a more down-to-earth setting: the bowling alley. I don’t know the age of the ad, but it feels Fifties. The ad copy claims the beer is “Sparkling … flavorful … distinctive.” Don’t they look like they’re having fun?

Beer In Ads #395: Champagne of Bottle Beer

June 20, 2011 By Jay Brooks

Monday’s ad is from 1948, and is for Miller High Life, which even then was being touted as the Champagne of Bottle Beer. It’s an obvious visual device to put the beer into a champagne bucket, but it works.

Beer In Ads #358: Miller’s Six-Bottle Man

April 28, 2011 By Jay Brooks

Thursday’s ad is also from 1983, but is for Miller Brewing. The ad welcomes us to “Miller Time” and features a bearded man in a plaid shirt (at first I thought he might be a lumberjack, but alas it doesn’t look like flannel) holding six bottles of Miller High Life in both hands, that is three bottles per hand. That’s a pretty impressive feat, especially when you consider he’s holding them in such a way that every label is facing us.

Beer In Ads #348: Miller’s High Life On The Farm

April 14, 2011 By Jay Brooks

ad-billboard
Thursday’s ad is for Miller High Life, showing a time capsule of a scene on what appears to be a farm. But one of those genteel farms of yesteryear. There’s a horse stable in the background, and in the field there’s a groups of dogs and three people who look ready for an English-style fox hunt. The foreground shows a butler serving a couple some Miller High Life on a tray, though the bottles on the table are still over half full. And I thought dalmatians were not good at hunting (too high strung), but then maybe that’s why the woman is holding the dog.

Beer In Ads #343: Go First Class With Miller High Life

April 7, 2011 By Jay Brooks

Thursday’s ad is for Miller High Life from 1957 showing a delicious-looking meal of steak with a number of side dishes, like roasted tomatoes, peas in mushroom caps(?) and onion rings. And how about that big pat of butter on top? I’m hungry now. The tagline is great, too. “For the taste of your life ‘Go First Class’ with Miller High Life.”

Beer In Ads #294: Miller High Life, For The Taste Of Your Life

January 21, 2011 By Jay Brooks

ad-billboard
Friday’s ad is for Miller High Life from 1956, displaying a busy, chaotic mess of images including a high life bottle being poured into what looks like a ceramic stein. Then there’s a loaf of a bread and summer sausage with a knife to cut it and napkins (one red and one with a checkerboard pattern) to keep one’s hands clean along with a large pipe and a sculpture of a rooster sitting on a beer keg in the background. With the high life logo hanging in the background, this as just seems way too busy. Sorry for the bad pub, but for me, that’s not in good taste.
