Beer In Ads #3939: A Wish For A Refreshing Centennial Year

December 14, 2021 By Jay Brooks

Tuesday’s ad is for “Hamm’s,” from 1965. This ad was made for Hamm’s Brewing, which was founded in 1865 by Theodore Hamm in St. Paul, Minnesota. At its peak, it was the 5th largest brewery in America, and operated facilities in five cities, including San Francisco, L.A., Baltimore and Houston, in addition to the original brewery in Minnesota. This one shows what appears to be an empty canoe fishing in a river, with the tagline “From the land of sky blue waters … A wish for a Refreshing Centennial year.” This apparently was during Hamm’s centennial, but that is certainly not clear from the ad itself.

Beer In Ads #3938: Refreshingly Yours … From The Land Of Sky Blue Waters

December 13, 2021 By Jay Brooks

Monday’s ad is for “Hamm’s,” from 1951. This one shows a group of people returning from a day of sailing a lake as back on shore other people are pouring beer and serving food, with the tagline “Refreshingly yours … from the land of sky blue waters.” The artwork is very reminiscent of the Beer Belongs series that Brewers Association did between the later 1940s and early 1960s.

Beer In Ads #3937: Hamm’s The Picture of Freshness

December 12, 2021 By Jay Brooks

Sunday’s ad is for “Hamm’s,” from 1965. This one shows two beer mugs, one filled with beer and the other containing a photo of a canoe on a pristine lake, with the tagline “The Picture of Freshness.” It’s very similar to a double-truck ad I shared in October.

Beer In Ads #3934: Thirsty? Big Fresh Taste

December 9, 2021 By Jay Brooks

Thursday’s ad is for “Hamm’s,” from 1961. This ad uses the long-running character Sascha, better known as the Hamm’s Bear, a cartoon mascot that the brewery began using in 1952 to great success, and only stopped using in 2000. This one is part of a series Hamm’s did in the early 1960s using the tagline “Big Fresh Taste” and showing their beer in a watery setting of some kind. In this ad, a several beer cans in a metal bucket are in a river (maybe?) and are having water poured over them, with a full glass of beer in the foreground. Above the headline is the phrase: “Thirsty? Taste the secret Hamm’s has captured from nature’s purest waters.”

Beer In Ads #3930: On Target!

December 5, 2021 By Jay Brooks

Sunday’s ad is for “Hamm’s,” from somewhere between the 1960s and 1980. This ad uses the long-running character Sascha, better known as the Hamm’s Bear, a cartoon mascot that the brewery began using in 1952 to great success, and only stopped using in 2000. This one shows the Hamm’s Bear lending dead center on a target and on a wolf who for some reason was also in the middle of the target, with the headline “On Target!” I’m not sure if was parachuting in, but there’s not evidence he was wearing a parachute, so who knows?
