Beer In Ads #2075: The Flavor That Scores

October 26, 2016 By Jay Brooks

Wednesday’s ad is for Schlitz, from the 1940s. In this ad, entitled “The Flavor That Scores,” an ump appears to be calling a player safe at home. But it’s hard to tell from that angle, and the amount of the scene we’re being shown. I guess we’ll have to take his word for it, and drink a beer.

Beer In Ads #2071: Something On The Ball

October 22, 2016 By Jay Brooks

Saturday’s ad is for Schlitz, from 1940. In this ad, entitled “Something On The Ball,” there are several sports using balls highlighted — golf, football, bowling and tennis, but baseball is the most prominent one, and since this ad ran five years before the last time the Chicago Cubs appeared in a World Series, I figured it was appropriate for today’s ad with them finally making it to the series this year. The ad finally comes around to tying it into Schlitz, by saying while the sports have “something on the ba;;,” Schlitz is so good it has “everything on the ball.”

Beer In Ads #2049: There’s Only One Favorite

September 30, 2016 By Jay Brooks

Friday’s ad is for Miller High Life, from 1950. In this ad, from the back of a baseball game program, a star player who’s tipping his hat, revealing a buzz cut, is taking a bow while holding four bats. So maybe he’s just warming up and getting ready for his at-bat. I’m not sure if he’s the favorite or the beer is, but my money’s on the beer.

Beer In Ads #2048: Opinions Differ …

September 29, 2016 By Jay Brooks

Thursday’s ad is for Miller High Life, from 1948. In this ad, from the back of a baseball game program, two players are arguing while an umpire. It’s to say exactly what’s going on since the catcher appears to holding the bat. How, or why, he took it from the batter is anybody’s guess. The ball is on the ground and another player is laying down behind, possibly on a base, and watching the scene unfold. As for the ump, he just seems to be standing there serenely, with his hands folded in front of him, waiting for the storm to subside. I think they could all use a beer.

Beer In Ads #2047: There’s No Arguing About ….

September 28, 2016 By Jay Brooks

Wednesday’s ad is for Miller High Life, from 1944. In this ad, from the back of a baseball game program, a batter is arguing with two umpires. I’m sure he’s not going to get anywhere, since “There’s No Arguing About ….” it.

Beer In Ads #2046: A Sure Hit

September 27, 2016 By Jay Brooks

Tuesday’s ad is for Miller High Life, from 1942. In this ad, from the back of a baseball game program, a player swings, and it doesn’t matter if he makes contact. Either way, he gets beer since it’s a sure hit. I figured with just a few more games before the end of the season, that I’d got out this month with baseball ads.

Beer In Ads #2032: The Man in Black Curls

September 13, 2016 By Jay Brooks

Tuesday’s ad is for Miller High Life, from 1960. In this ad, one of a series featuring a nearly black and white ad, with only the beer in color, and the same man engaged in various activities. This time, he’s watching the sport of Curling. It originated in Scotland in the 16th century and spread to wherever Scottish people settled, like New Zealand or Canada. It looks the curling team he’s watching is wearing formal military uniforms, with loads of medals on their jackets. And not a few, but there are so many they must be weighing them down with the extra weight.

Beer In Ads #2030: The Man in Black Golfs

September 11, 2016 By Jay Brooks

Sunday’s ad is for Miller High Life, from 1958. In this ad, one of a series featuring a nearly black and white ad, with only the beer in color, and the same man engaged in various activities. This time, he’s leaning on his golf bag in the clubhouse, apparently fresh off a round of eighteen, with a beer in one hand. He’s looking rather pensive, too. Maybe he didn’t shoot a very good round.

Beer In Ads #2029: The Man in Black Skis

September 10, 2016 By Jay Brooks

Saturday’s ad is for Miller High Life, from 1959. In this ad, one of a series featuring a nearly black and white ad, with only the beer in color, and the same man engaged in various activities. This time, he’s leaning against the stone fireplace in a ski lodge, apparently fresh off the slopes, and in need of both warmth and a cold beer.

Beer In Ads #2025: Enjoy Life With Tennis, Golf & Baseball

September 6, 2016 By Jay Brooks

Tuesday’s ad is for Miller High Life, from 1939. In this ad, like yesterday’s ad, it’s all about the action! “Wherever there’s action — wherever people are doing things — you’ll find Miller High Life. There’s a blithe lift to this sparkling, amber brew that puts it in time with action and fun,” whatever that means.
