Beer In Ads #1000: Beer Glass With Green Glove

October 17, 2013 By Jay Brooks

Thursday’s ad is, believe it or not, the 1,000th ad featured here, so I wanted to pick a special one to mark the occasion. The ad was created by famed Swiss poster artist Peter Birkhäuser, in 1957. It’s a beautiful illustration of a green-gloved hand holding a pilsner glass filled with a mahogany-colored beer with a tan head. Simply gorgeous.

Beer In Ads #691: Leupin’s Beer Glasses

September 11, 2012 By Jay Brooks

Tuesday’s ad is another by famed Swiss illustrator Herbert Leupin. Like many of his others, I’m not sure what beer this ad is for or when it was created, though he worked mainly beginning in the late 1930s and then took up paintings around 1970. So we can safely say it was between those dates. The two glasses look like they could be separate pieces, since the blue backgrounds look just a hair different shades. But boy oh boy, Leupin sure could draw beer that looks good enough to drink.

Only then may you take your first sip.

Beer In Ads #534: Bayrische Bierhalle Kropf

February 2, 2012 By Jay Brooks

Thursday’s ad is from Switzerland, specifically Zurich, and is for possibly a restaurant or beer hall. Because Bayrische Bierhalle Kropf, in German, is Bavarian Beer Hall Kropf. It’s by Herman Rudolf Seifert, though I can’t find any substantive information about him. Featuring prominently in the ad is the hammers logo with the date 1417, which is used on the Hacker-Pschorr logo so perhaps it is a beer hall that serves their beer.

Beer In Ads #477: Herbert Leupin’s Manly Kuhles Bier

November 15, 2011 By Jay Brooks

Tuesday’s ad is yet another ad by famed Swiss illustrator Herbert Leupin. Like the last two, I’m not sure what beer this ad is for or when it was created. The ad, of course, is for kühles bier — cold beer — though instead of being like yesterday’s ad showing a “hot” blonde in a swimsuit frolicking in the ocean, this one shows a dashing man about to quench his thirst with a tasty beverage.

Beer In Ads #476: Herbert Leupin’s Kuhles Bier

November 14, 2011 By Jay Brooks

Monday’s ad is an another interesting ad by famed Swiss illustrator Herbert Leupin. Like the last one, I’m not sure what beer this ad is for or when it was created, though he worked mainly beginning in the late 1930s and then took up painting around 1970. So we can safely say it was between those dates. The ad, of course, is for kühles bier — cold beer — though showing a “hot” blonde in a swimsuit frolicking in the ocean doesn’t really seem consistent with that. Still, it’s a cool ad all the same.

Beer In Ads #471: Herbert Leupin’s Umbrella Beer

November 7, 2011 By Jay Brooks

Monday’s ad is an interesting ad by famed Swiss illustrator Herbert Leupin. I’m not sure what beer this ad is for or when it was created, though he worked mainly beginning in the late 1930s and then took up paintings around 1970. So we can safely say it was between those dates. I love the simplicity, though, and the cartoonish hand holding up the umbrella.

Beer In Art #116: Albert Anker’s Still Life With Beer & Radish

February 27, 2011 By Jay Brooks

art-beer
This week’s work of art is by a relatively unknown Swiss artist, Albert Anker, though in his native Switzerland he’s often called his country’s “national painter” because the subject of his paintings so often depicted “19th-century Swiss village life.” Our painting today is a still life entitled “Bier und Rettich” or “Beer and Radish.” The oil painting was completed in 1898 and today hangs in the Kunstmuseum in Bern, Switzerland.

Anker-beer-and-radish-1898

There’s a biography of Anker at Wikipedia and also at the official Albert Anker website, although it’s only in French and German. You can also find links to more of Anker’s art at the ArtCyclopedia and at Art Prints on Demand.

Beer In Ads #192: Lowenbrau Zurich

September 10, 2010 By Jay Brooks

ad-billboard
Friday’s ad is a striking ad for the Swiss Lowenbrau in Zurich. There’s not much to say about it, it pretty much speaks for itself. It’s simple, only two colors; the red lion, holding and wrapped in the black flag. Timeless.

Beer In Ads #185: Trinkt Sternenberg Bier

September 1, 2010 By Jay Brooks

ad-billboard
Wednesday’s ad is for another Swiss beer, Brauerei Zum Sternenberg, from Basel. With the tagline “Trinkt Sternenberg Bier” or drink Sternenberg beer, the artwork resembles an illustration from a children’s book. The “king” sits on a throne with brewer’s stars on each arm and there’s one behind him, too. Below the throne, a triple tap fountain spills beer into a pool. The kings seems to be shouting “drink, drink” urging on the kneeling man chugging his beer. Certainly one of the odder scenes in a beer ad.
