Tuesday’s ad is for Natural Light, from 1980. Today is the birthday of baseball legend Mickey Mantle. In the mid-1970s, Mantle did some commercials, along with fellow Yankees teammate Whitey Ford, for Miller Lite. So when he did this ad for rival Natural Light, they played up his being a switch hitter “who switched to Natural Light.”

OMG – never saw that ad (which I presume ran in SI & other mags w/predominantly male readership). By the time that ad ran, the Mick (who was my favorite baseball player in the 50’s) probably should have drunk that kind of alcohol even then – he was a serious boozer in his heyday. He had a liver transplant (successful) 2 months before he died in 1995 (age 63, from liver cancer; cancer ran in his family).
