Saturday’s ad is for Bierbrauerei Falken Schaffhausen, from around 1935. From the late 1800s until the 1970s, poster art really came into its own, and in Europe a lot of really cool posters, many of them for breweries, were produced. This poster was made for the Bierbrauerei Falken Schaffhausen, or Falcon Brewery, of Schaffhausen , Switzerland. The brewery was founded in 1799, and is still in business today, and is “considered the only independent brewery in the Schaffhausen region,” and is Switzerland’s 5th largest brewery. It was created by Swiss artist M. Diakeli.

This poster was made to promote Swiss beer by the Swiss Brewery Association with the tagline “Unsere Schweiz – Unser Bier,” which translates as “Our Switzerland — Our Beer.” It was created by Swiss artist Erich Hörner.

Thursday’s ad is for World Champion of the Thirst Quencher, from 1962. At least that’s the title given to it on the Swiss Poster Museum’s website. From the late 1800s until the 1960s, poster art really came into its own, and in Europe a lot of really cool posters, many of them for breweries, were produced. This poster was made to promote Swiss beer by the Swiss Brewery Association. It was created by Swiss artist Paul Trauffer.

The text of the poster on the glass is “Le Monde Entier En Boit,” which Google translates as “The Whole World Drinks.” I personally like the other translation a little better, although that may be because there was another poster using the same image but with different text. I could only find a small image of it, but you see the text is different, although I can’t quite make it out.

Wednesday’s ad is for Leurs Bieres Sodibo Gold Mohur Imperial Hawk, from 1928. From the late 1800s until the 1960s, poster art really came into its own, and in Europe a lot of really cool posters, many of them for breweries, were produced. I’m not sure exactly what this poster was meant to advertise or what the name of the brewery, although I think the beer’s name was Gold Mohur Imperial Hawk. It was created by French artist Le Maire.

I believe this poster was made to promote Swiss beer by the Swiss Brewery Association.  The artist who created the poster was Swiss artist Alfred Koella.

Beer In Ads #3060: Haldengut Jesters

July 20, 2019 By Jay Brooks

This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is 3993724870_6a0224e391.jpg

Saturday’s ad is for Haldengut, from 1938. From the late 1800s until the 1960s, poster art really came into its own, and in Europe a lot of really cool posters, many of them for breweries, were produced. This poster was made for Brauerei Haldengut, in Winterthur, Switzerland, located in the Canton of Zürich. It was founded between 1841 and 42, when “Ferdinand Ernst expanded his farm ‘Haldengut’ on the southern slope of the Lindberg in Winterthur to include a stately brewery. They began brewing in 1843. In 1994, Heineken acquired the brewery, who closed it in 1997. The artist who created the poster was Swiss graphic designer and painter Alois Carigiet. It’s possible that what appear to be jesters could also be the symbols represented on European cards, which are often different than the standard suits we’re familiar with. Certainly acorns and bells are typical so perhaps flowers and letters may have been used at one time, too.

Beer In Ads #3059: Durst

July 19, 2019 By Jay Brooks

This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is 3993724870_6a0224e391.jpg

Friday’s ad is for Durst, from 1949, which means “thirst.” From the late 1800s until the 1960s, poster art really came into its own, and in Europe a lot of really cool posters, many of them for breweries, were produced. This poster was made to promote Swiss beer by the Swiss Brewery Association. It was created by Swiss artist Fritz Wüthrich.

And this is another version where the color is reproduced very differently and which gives it a different feel, I believe, however unintentional.

Wuthrich-1949-durst

They also did a version where “Soif” is written in the sand. Soif is French for thirst so I wonder if they did several of these posters with Thirst written a variety of languages.

From the late 1800s until the 1960s, poster art really came into its own, and in Europe a lot of really cool posters, many of them for breweries, were produced. This poster was made to promote Swiss beer by the Swiss Brewery Association. It was created by Swiss artist Rolf Gfeller.

July 17, 2019 By Jay Brooks

This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is 3993724870_6a0224e391.jpg

Wednesday’s ad is for Bier, Bière, Birra, from 1972, with the tagline “Santé!,” or “Health!” From the late 1800s until the 1960s, poster art really came into its own, and in Europe a lot of really cool posters, many of them for breweries, were produced. This poster was made to promote Swiss beer by the Swiss Brewery Association. I’m not sure who the artist who created it was, although I think it’s a photograph rather than a photorealistic painting.
