Beer In Ads #3253: Bock Beer Goat Couple

February 8, 2020 By Jay Brooks

This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is 3993724870_6a0224e391.jpg

Saturday’s ad is for Bock Beer, from the early 1900s. From the late 1800s until the 1980s, poster art really came into its own, and in Europe a lot of really cool posters, many of them for breweries, were produced. I’ve been posting vintage European posters all last year, and will continue to do so in 2020. This poster was for an unknown breweries Bock Beer around the turn of the last century, and I likewise have no idea who created the poster.

February 7, 2020 By Jay Brooks

This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is 3993724870_6a0224e391.jpg

Friday’s ad is for Carlsberg Pilsner, from 1908. From the late 1800s until the 1980s, poster art really came into its own, and in Europe a lot of really cool posters, many of them for breweries, were produced. I’ve been posting vintage European posters all last year, and will continue to do so in 2020. This poster was for Carlsberg Brewing of Copenhagen, Denmark. “The horizontal poster shows four different scenes with people enjoying their beer, amongst them a skier, a cycling woman, a dandy and a hunter. Above them is the inscription “Carlsberg Pilsner” and below ‘DRIKKES AARET RUNDT,’ which translates as “Drinked” or ‘Drank Year Round.’ “The latter makes it clear, that the four scenes also show the four seasons and that you can always drink Carlsberg Pilsner.” The poster was created by Danish artist Carsten Ravn.

As I understand it, the poster was reprinted over the years, and I suspect that the darker one below may be the original.

Wednesday’s ad is for Meistertrunk, from 1930. From the late 1800s until the 1980s, poster art really came into its own, and in Europe a lot of really cool posters, many of them for breweries, were produced. I’ve been posting vintage European posters all last year, and will continue to do so in 2020. It “was one of the oldest breweries in Westphalia and has its headquarters at the Old Market in Dortmund. The company was able to look back on more than 550 years of brewing tradition and was family-owned from 1729 until 1996.” It was acquired by Dortmunder Actien Brauerei in 1996, and today is part of the Radeberger Group. The poster was created by German artist and architect Siegmund Suchodolski.

Brewhog Determines An Early Spring Bock For 2020

February 2, 2020 By Jay Brooks

groundhog-day

Over in Gobbler’s Knob, in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, Phil the Groundhog — a.k.a. the Brewhog — raised up his head this morning and looked around, and this year did not see his shadow. You know what that means? It means an early spring, and earlier spring bock for us. You can see a video of Punxsutawney Phil here. And there’s more information about Groundhog Day from the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club.

groundhog-field-beer

Here’s a new report of this year’s prediction in Punxsutawney.

And here’s a report on it from Time:

Pennsylvania’s most famous groundhog on Sunday declared: “Spring will be early, it’s a certainty.”

At sunrise on Groundhog Day, members of Punxsutawney Phil’s top hat-wearing inner circle revealed the cuddly oracle’s prediction — his 134th, according to the Pennsylvania Tourism Office.

Awoken by the crowd’s chants of “Phil!” the groundhog was hoisted in the air for the assembly to hail before making his decision. He then grasped the glove of a handler as a member of his inner circle announced that spring would come early this year.

The annual event has its origin in a German legend that says if a furry rodent casts a shadow on Feb. 2, winter continues. If not, spring comes early.

And if you don’t have time to watch all of the deliciously wonderful Groundhog Day film today, here it is in a slightly shorter version just over three minutes.
