Beer In Ads #2931: Beer Glass Man

March 12, 2019 By Jay Brooks

Tuesday’s ad is for beer at some sort of special celebration, such as New Year’s Eve or Mardi Gras, or perhaps Carnival, from 1954. This is certainly one of the more bizarre ones, with a man made out of beer glasses drinking a bottle of “Bier,” with the label an earlier poster in this series. How meta. From the late 1800s until the 1960s, poster art really came into its own, and in Europe a lot of really cool posters, many of them for breweries, were produced. This is part of a series of posters promoting beer by the German Brewers Association in the mid-20th century. It was created by German artist Thomas Abeking.

Beer In Ads #2924: Beer Belongs To The Food

March 5, 2019 By Jay Brooks

Tuesday’s ad is for gehört zum Essen, or “Beer belongs to the food,” from 1950. That’s the Google translation, I suspect there’s a better, idiomatic meaning to that phrase. From the late 1800s until the 1960s, poster art really came into its own, and in Europe a lot of really cool posters, many of them for breweries, were produced. This is part of a series of posters promoting beer by the German Brewers Association in the mid-20th century. It was created by German artist Thomas Abeking.

The also a few years later used the same Abeking illustration but with different text, in this case “fördert Appetit und Stoffwechsel,” which translated as “beer promotes appetite and metabolism.”

Monday’s ad is for mit Matjes noch Köstlicher!, or “Beer — even more delicious with Matjes!,” from 1950. What is Matjes, you may ask? Yeah, I didn’t know either, but it’s soused herring. From the late 1800s until the 1960s, poster art really came into its own, and in Europe a lot of really cool posters, many of them for breweries, were produced.
