Beer In Ads #480: Red For Black Label

November 18, 2011 By Jay Brooks

Friday’s ad is for Carling Black Label, from 1962. The ad is pretty simple, and I assume I may be missing part of it since there’s no text at all. But the photo is just a red-headed woman wearing all red, with red nail polish, holding a glass of Carling Black Label while looking longingly at the camera. Red for Black Label. Who’s thirsty?

Beer In Ads #479: Real Gusto Plain

November 17, 2011 By Jay Brooks

Thursday’s ad is for Schlitz, from their “Real Gusto” series of ads that took place in the 1960s. This is at least the fourth one of these I’ve featured, and it’s probably one of the tamest. While other ads included a can, a hat and even the Olympics, this is just a smiling man in a plain white shirt gripping his mug of beer as foam trickles down the side, threatening to drip to the ground any second now.

Beer In Ads #478: Eisbär-Braü Schneider Brive

November 16, 2011 By Jay Brooks

Wednesday’s ad is for Eisbär-Braü Schneider Brive. And while I don’t know the pilsner ad’s age, it does contain art nouveau elements, especially those beautiful framing elements, which suggests the decades right before and right after the turn of the 18th century into the 19th. The polar bear with the mug of beer on a tray is cool, too, but that doesn’t look like a pilsner, does it?

Beer In Ads #477: Herbert Leupin’s Manly Kuhles Bier

November 15, 2011 By Jay Brooks

Tuesday’s ad is yet another ad by famed Swiss illustrator Herbert Leupin. Like the last two, I’m not sure what beer this ad is for or when it was created. The ad, of course, is for kühles bier — cold beer — though instead of being like yesterday’s ad showing a “hot” blonde in a swimsuit frolicking in the ocean, this one shows a dashing man about to quench his thirst with a tasty beverage.

Beer In Ads #476: Herbert Leupin’s Kuhles Bier

November 14, 2011 By Jay Brooks

Monday’s ad is an another interesting ad by famed Swiss illustrator Herbert Leupin. Like the last one, I’m not sure what beer this ad is for or when it was created, though he worked mainly beginning in the late 1930s and then took up painting around 1970. So we can safely say it was between those dates. The ad, of course, is for kühles bier — cold beer — though showing a “hot” blonde in a swimsuit frolicking in the ocean doesn’t really seem consistent with that. Still, it’s a cool ad all the same.

Guinness Ad #93: Now, I Feel I’ve Earned A Guinness

November 12, 2011 By Jay Brooks

guinness-toucan
Our 93rd Guinness ad shows a very prolific fisherman who’s clearly waaay over the catch limit for the day. But I guess he had to fill the boat with fish before he felt entitled to a Guinness. I confess I work that way, too. I’ll deny myself a beer until I finish an article or even a post to motivate myself to get it done. Somehow it tastes sweeter — or hoppier — that way.

Beer In Ads #475: The Sapporo Stare

November 11, 2011 By Jay Brooks

Friday’s ad is another one for the Japanese beer Sapporo, this one from 1935. What a great expression on her face as she looks longingly and lovingly at whoever just poured her the glass of beer.

Beer In Ads #474: Sapporo Geisha

November 10, 2011 By Jay Brooks

Thursday’s ad is for the Japanese beer Sapporo, from 1927. I don’t know if the woman really is a geisha, but it made for a snappier title. Plus, it’s a cut above the usual ad in artistry.

Beer In Ads #473: A Glass Crafted To Keep Beer Colder

November 9, 2011 By Jay Brooks

Wednesday’s ad is for Artois, when the brewed more than just Stella. I don’t the ad’s age, but it certainly looks retro and highly stylized. Anybody know when they used the slogan “Pass on something good?” But the ad isn’t even about the beer, but the glass, which apparently is “A Glass Crafted To Keep Beer Colder” with an arctic setting to drive home the point.

Beer In Ads #472: Biere Du Lion

November 9, 2011 By Jay Brooks

Tuesday’s ad is an another old classic, by Eugene Oge, a French illustrator who did a number of great beer adverts during his lifetime from 1861-1936. He was a major figure in the Belle Epoque and did many outstanding ads for resorts, food, and all sorts of beverages and brands. This is the second of his I’ve featured, the first being Biere au Diable. This one, Biere Du Lion, I think was a Wallonian brand, from Brasserie Vervifontaine? I love the expression on the drinking fat man.
