Beer In Ads #2980: Triumphator

April 30, 2019 By Jay Brooks

This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is 3993724870_6a0224e391.jpg

Tuesday’s ad is for Triumphator Löwenbräu, from 1940 or 1950. From the late 1800s until the 1960s, poster art really came into its own, and in Europe a lot of really cool posters, many of them for breweries, were produced. This more recent poster is for Triumphator Löwenbräu, a doppelbock brand from the brewery, Löwenbräu AG, located in Munich. The beer is still being brewed today. No one seems to know who the artist was, and at least one source thinks he or she may have been Swiss, although most believe the artist was German.

Monday’s ad is for Gurten Bier, from 1993. From the late 1800s until the 1960s, poster art really came into its own, and in Europe a lot of really cool posters, many of them for breweries, were produced. This more recent poster is for Gurten Bier, a beer brand of the former brewery, Gurten Bier AG, located in Gurten, nearby the city of Bern, Switzerland. The brewery was founded in 1864 by Johann Juker, but today is owned by Carlsberg. The poster was created by Swiss graphic designer Reinhart Morscher.

Sunday’s ad is for Bière du Cardinal Friborg, from 1910. From the late 1800s until the 1960s, poster art really came into its own, and in Europe a lot of really cool posters, many of them for breweries, were produced. Brasserie Cardinal was founded in 1788 by François Piller, and is located in Fribourg, Switzerland. The brewery was acquired by Feldschlösschen in 1991. It’s not known who the artist is that created this poster, at least I wasn’t able to discover who made it.

Beer In Ads #2953: The Beer Glass

April 3, 2019 By Jay Brooks

Wednesday’s ad is for an untitled work I’m calling The Beer Glass, from 1960. From the late 1800s until the 1960s, poster art really came into its own, and in Europe a lot of really cool posters, many of them for breweries, were produced. I’m not sure if this was part of posters promoting beer by the German Brewers Association, the Swiss Brewery Association, or something entirely different. It was created by Swiss artist Willi Eldenbenz.

Below is a more crude scan or photo of the same illustration printed in a magazine, or book, which gives some idea of how it may have been used. It seems likely that whatever was on the facing page gives this more context.

Tuesday’s ad is for an untitled work I’m calling The Smoking Beer, from 1960. From the late 1800s until the 1960s, poster art really came into its own, and in Europe a lot of really cool posters, many of them for breweries, were produced. I’m not sure if this was part of posters promoting beer by the German Brewers Association, the Swiss Brewery Association, or something entirely different. Sunday’s ad is for Suntory Beer, from 1985. From the late 1800s until the 1960s, poster art really came into its own, and in Europe a lot of really cool posters, many of them for breweries, were produced. Swiss artist Herbert Leupin did a series of posters promoting beer by both the Swiss Breweries’ Association and the German Brewers Association. that began in the 1950s. He also later did work for specific breweries, such as Japan’s Suntory Beer.

Friday’s ad is for an illustration of the King of Spades, as depicted on a deck of cards, holding a ginormous glass of beer, from 1953. From the late 1800s until the 1960s, poster art really came into its own, and in Europe a lot of really cool posters, many of them for breweries, were produced. This is another in a series of posters promoting beer by the Swiss Breweries’ Association that began in the 1950s. It was created by Swiss artist Herbert Leupin, who also did a number of posters for the German Brewers Association, as well.

Beer In Ads #2940: Two Beer Glasses

March 21, 2019 By Jay Brooks

This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is 3993724870_6a0224e391.jpg

Thursday’s ad is for an illustration of two beer glasses, from sometime in the late 1859s or 1960s. From the late 1800s until the 1960s, poster art really came into its own, and in Europe a lot of really cool posters, many of them for breweries, were produced. This may have been part of a series of posters promoting beer by the German Brewers Association in the mid-20th century, but it looks more like an early draft of something. It was created by Swiss artist Herbert Leupin.
