Thursday’s ad is for O’Keefe’s, from 1948. Part of Carling O’Keefe’s “Moulders of ‘Canada Unlimited'” series, whatever that means, the ad features a painting by Rex Woods showing the stereotypical “industrial worker” taking the bus to work. According to the ad, they’re the men “moulding a new era for Canada.”
Wednesday’s ad is for The Kamm & Schellinger Brewing Co., from Mishawaka, Indiana. It’s from the 1880s, and seems like a very confident ad, what with having a roaring lion straddling the entire Earth and the slogan “Challenge the World.” Since chances are you’ve never heard of them, I think they may not have won that challenge. World 1, Kamm & Schellinger 0.
Tuesday’s ad is for Schlitz, from 1942. Schlitz used that bear in a number of their ads from around that time period. This one is apparently a graduate (of what I don’t know) and possibly majored in geography, as he’s using a pointer to show us the city of Milwaukee, Wisconsin on a globe. After all, Schlitz was “The Beer That Made Milwaukee Famous.”
Monday’s ad, since it’s St. Patrick’s Day, is for Guinness. This Guinness ad is done in the style of Alphonse Mucha. I have no idea when it was created, but it’s a beautiful ad nonetheless. Happy St. Patrick’s Day.
Sunday’s ad is for La Bitacora, a Spanish beer (I believe) since it reads Barcelona at the bottom right. The top translates as, essentially, brewers of ale. But since Google Translate turns La Bitácora into “the blog,” so maybe it’s not really an old ad after all. But it certainly looks like one.
Saturday’s ad is for Jubilator, a French beer (I believe) that’s still being made today by the Schutzenberger Brewery. I’m not sure when this ad/poster was created, but probably around a century ago.
Friday’s ad is for a Russian beer, and I give up trying to figure out what is says. But it is a beautiful ad, the bottle’s cool, the table nicely set with a bowl of lobster, with a view of an impressive castle out the window.
Thursday’s ad is for Kanuhkuhb, or whatever that is in the Cyrillic alphabet. It may be that it’s for Kalinkin Beer, a Russian beer brand, from 1903. It’s a very colorful ad, but who drinks a beer on a swing?
Wednesday’s ad is for English brewer’s “Beer is Best” campaign, from 1936. The campaign began in 1933, and ran for 30 years, and included “a generic advertising campaign with a nationwide poster campaign and television advertising involving Bobby Moore and his wife Tina and the entire Liverpool football team. At its peak it was worth over AL1 million per annum in today’s money.” It was done by a C. Harrison and depicts an on-going darts game of 301. There are four beer glasses on the table, two full and two empty. I’m getting thirsty just looking at it.
Tuesday’s ad is for Mitchell & Butlers, a “Good Honest Beer” from the Cape Hill Brewery in Birmingham, England. It’s a curious ad, with a pair of full beer glasses, portrayed almost as if they’re a couple on a romantic date sitting on a bench surrounding an old tree overlooking a field. Or maybe it’s just a couple of mates hanging out by a field of wheat. Either way, it’s a funny little ad.
