Beer In Ads #1118: Hot Off The Grill

March 2, 2014 By Jay Brooks

Sunday’s ad is for Schlitz, from the 1950s, probably. This is just the illustration for the ad, with the woman delivering four freshly-opened bottles of Schlitz with four glasses on a tray. What a hostess! It looks like they;re going to have quite a nice barbecue. I’m getting hungry — and thirsty — just looking at it.

Beer In Ads #1117: Hackerbrau

March 1, 2014 By Jay Brooks

Saturday’s ad is for Hackerbrau, from the 1920s. Hacker used to be one of the big Munich breweries but merged with Pschorrbräu in 1972 to become the Hacker-Pschorr Brewery. This ad has a decidedly travel adventure in Africa feel to it, and looks like the artistic poster art of that time period.

Beer In Ads #1116: G-Uinness

February 28, 2014 By Jay Brooks

Friday’s ad is for Guinness, from the 1950s or possibly early 60s. It’s a very minimalist ad, but I love how animated the artist made the “G” and how much it conveys with just a few black lines.

Beer In Ads #1115: So Sparkling Clear?

February 27, 2014 By Jay Brooks

Thursday’s ad is for Miller High Life, from 1961. After the Sochi Olympics, a little skiing just made sense. This was, I believe, before Miller started using the Tetra hop that is resistant to getting lightstruck. So who knows how this beer would have tasted coming off the slopes.

Anna Kendrick: Actress, Beer Lover

February 27, 2014 By Jay Brooks

acting
Maybe it was starring in Drinking Buddies, or doing a recent non-Super Bowl ad for Newcastle Brown Ale, but actress Anna Kendrick loves her beer. The actress, who’s best known for her roles in Up in the Air, Pitch Perfect and the Twilight film series, admitted her love of beer in a recent interview. Having done two musicals recently, and now working on the Pitch Perfect sequel, she’s done with singing for the very understandable reason that’s she’d rather drink beer, and apparently it’s one or the other: singing or beer. Easy decision. Here’s what Perez Hilton is reporting she said.

I never want to sing again, honestly. It’s hard as fuck. The Pitch Perfect [sequel] is going to be fine, ten girls have to be able to sing the songs so it’s going to be fine, but doing The Last Five Years and then Into the Woods straight away, I was like, I don’t want to have to think about my voice so much. I want to be able to drink beer whenever I want.

I’ll drink to that.
