Beer In Ads #2096: This Calls For … Hungry?

November 16, 2016 By Jay Brooks

Wednesday’s ad is for Budweiser, from 1962. In this ad, part of series entitled “This calls for …,” in this case a “Hungry?” A man sits in front of a fireplace, nose deep in a glass of beer, holding the can in the other hand. In front of him is a big slab of ribeye steak on an indoor Hibachi grill. I can’t quite work out if he’s cooking the steak, or eating it right off the grill. It does look like it’s on a table, and probably not in a kitchen, so maybe. Although that is a lot of steak for one man. Until, of course, you remember this was when men were still manly men.

Beer In Ads #2095: This Calls For … Home From Work

November 15, 2016 By Jay Brooks

Tuesday’s ad is for Budweiser, from 1962. In this ad, part of series entitled “This calls for …,” in this case a “Home From Work….” “The day’s problems melt when there are ‘little things’ to talk about.” I assume the little things refer to their baby, since they’re both looking down, and you can see a highchair behind the woman wearing the apron. I love that he needed a beer first, though.

Beer In Ads #2094: This Calls For … After Bowling

November 14, 2016 By Jay Brooks

Monday’s ad is for Budweiser, from 1963. In this ad, part of series entitled “This calls for …,” in this case a “After Bowling.” Bowling used to be an incredibly popular sport, and there’s an interesting book about how it, and indeed many of the things people used to get together to participate in, have fallen by the wayside, called “Bowling Alone.” But in the 1960s it was still rolling along, and apparently after playing, “the winners rub it in, the losers alibi.” Sheesh, that doesn’t seem like friendly competition. But at least they had beer. What’s bowling without beer?

Beer In Ads #2093: This Calls For … Big Appetite

November 13, 2016 By Jay Brooks

Sunday’s ad is for Budweiser, from 1963. In this ad, part of series entitled “This calls for …,” in this case a “Big Appetite.” The woman is finishing dinner and opening the lid to whatever dish she’s been cooking, with an expectant look on her face, as her man leans in for a closer smell. I do like that he’s holding his beer close to the dish, so he can theoretically smell both at the same time. Then there’s the tagline. “Loosen your tie and enjoy your Budweiser.” You could pitch in and help, but nah, this is 1963. The little woman will take care of it.

Beer In Ads #2092: This Calls For … After The Show

November 12, 2016 By Jay Brooks

Saturday’s ad is for Budweiser, from 1962. In this ad, part of series entitled “This calls for …,” in this case “after the show.” After some kind of show — highbrow one presumes given how they’re dressed — two couples go to a “friendly tavern” to talk, have a bite to eat and drink some beer. I can’t work out if the man on the right (with the beaver on his head – look closely, you’ll see it) has actually said something witty, or if they’ve all had enough to drink that they’re just humoring him.

Beer In Ads #2091: This Calls For … Cheese And Crackers

November 11, 2016 By Jay Brooks

Friday’s ad is for Budweiser, from 1963. In this ad, part of series entitled “This calls for …,” in this case “cheese and crackers.” I love the expression on the man’s face, intently watching who knows what on television. Is it me, or is that head on his beer a tad too generous.

Beer In Ads #2090: The Judges Were Right

November 10, 2016 By Jay Brooks

Thursday’s ad is for Budweiser, from 1937. In this ad, showing eight medals from beer competitions between 1876 and 1908, years before the ad ran. But then, there weren’t too many beer competitions in the U.S. at least between 1919 and 1933, four years before this ad ran, and they were trying to rebuild. But it would be great to have a time machine so that, after killing Hitler of course, you go back and taste Bud, Miller High Life, Schlitz, etc. in those early years. Not an old, found bottle, but a fresh sample from that time.

Beer In Ads #2089: She Married Two Men

November 9, 2016 By Jay Brooks

Wednesday’s ad is for Budweiser, from 1956. In this ad, with the headline “She Found She Married Two Men,” is an amazingly sexist ad. The text continues with “all women do,” apparently something about an “Inner Man” and planning — a lot of planning — to make meals to make him contended. Here’s the “fact” they conclude with. “Budweiser has delighted more husbands than any other brew ever known.” Wow.

Beer In Ads #2088: When Gentlemen Agree …

November 8, 2016 By Jay Brooks

Tuesday’s election ad is for Budweiser, from 1965. In this ad, with the headline “When Gentlemen Agree …,” the elephant and the donkey appear happy and sharing a beer. This is when Johnson was president and shortly before we elected Nixon. I sure hope both sides of this year’s election can share a beer and appear so happy, and soon.

Beer In Ads #2087: Let’s Get Together

November 7, 2016 By Jay Brooks

Monday’s ad is for Budweiser, from 1952. In this ad, with the headline “Let’s Get Together,” and showing an angry elephant with his hands folded, and an equally angry donkey, both sitting on what seems to be a giant block of ice. I assume they’re waiting for hell to freeze over? The ad seems to be somewhat echoing our election tomorrow, 64 years after it first appeared. With only one more day to go until “E-Day” tomorrow, please make sure you to do exercise your right and make your vote count. Seriously, let’s get together on this.
