Beer In Ads #427: Miss Rheingold Goes To The Dogs

August 2, 2011 By Jay Brooks

Monday’s ad is a 1949 ad for Rheingold Beer, featuring Miss Rheingold for that year, Pat McElroy. In the ad, Miss McElroy is holding the trophy she and her dog have just won. Based on her outfit, I think Miss Rheingold must have been a Green Bay Packers fan.

Ranking made by Wikio

As usual, I included the relative movements of each blog from last month. Last month — and for the past few — movement among the top of the list was limited and things were fairly static. All that’s changed this month, as only one of the top 30 is in the same position as last month, and only three moved up or down only one spot. That means of the remaining 26, each one moved at least two spots along the continuum. Things are shaking up.

This month’s champion mover was The Brew Site, who jumped 16 places. As always, I continue to stress that this is just a bit of fun and that we shouldn’t take it too seriously. Until next month ….

OBF Opening Ceremonies

August 1, 2011 By Jay Brooks

obf
After we marched from McMenamin’s Crystal Ballroom to the Tom McCall Waterfront Park and the Oregon Brewers Festival, the ceremonial keg was brought into the park by the Hammerheads from this year’s parade host brewery, McMenamin’s.

Guinness Ad #79: Opening Time Is Guinness Time

July 30, 2011 By Jay Brooks

guinness-toucan
Our 79th Guinness uses the tagline “Opening Time Is Guinness Time.” In this case, the opening refers to the oyster, with a smiling pint of Guinness resting inside. The slogan at the bottom is the common “Guinness is good for you.” My one question, is since when did oysters have eyes?

Beer In Ads #425: Miss Rheingold’s Look Out Foxes

July 29, 2011 By Jay Brooks

Friday’s ad is a 1951 ad for Rheingold Beer, featuring Miss Rheingold for that year, Elise Gammon. In the ad, Miss Gammon is ready for the hunt, surrounded by hound dogs. Did Americans ever do the full British fox hunts? Because old ads sure seem to use the theme a lot.

Beer In Ads #424: Miss Rheingold’s Got A Squeeze Box

July 28, 2011 By Jay Brooks

Thursday’s ad is a 1956 ad for Rheingold Beer, featuring Miss Rheingold for that year, Millie Merritt. In the ad, Miss Merritt is wearing an exotic red dress sitting in the old barn with her squeeze box accordion, waiting for the performance, as the sign behind her promises, to take place “tonig.”

Oregon Brewers Festival Parade 2011

July 28, 2011 By Jay Brooks

obf
Although I missed last year’s Oregon Brewers Festival for the first time in many years, it felt like it had been at least five years since I’d been back. That’s how much I missed Portland, and I was thrilled to be there again. After the Brewer’s Dinner Wednesday night, I attended the brunch, this year held at McMenamin’s Crystal Ballroom, and helped setup for the event beforehand, as well. After everyone feasted and prepared their stomachs for the day’s drinking, what looked to be close to 1200 people lined up for the parade. That’s just a guess, but it was easily the biggest crowd I’d seen for the parade, and this was my third time, of the five so far. Many of the usual suspects were there, the band, the Rogue Friars, people in kilts, people wearing literal hopheads, etc. This year’s Grand Marshall was Portland legend Fred Eckhardt who led the parade via pedicab down to the Tom McCall Waterfront Park, the annual home of the beer festival. Here are some photos from the parade. Enjoy.

After arriving at the festival grounds, it was time to tap the keg and officially start the festival. Look for the ceremonies coming soon in part 2.

Beer In Ads #423: Miss Rheingold’s Puppies & Kittens

July 27, 2011 By Jay Brooks

Wednesday’s ad is a 1948 ad for Rheingold Beer, featuring Miss Rheingold for that year, Pat Quinlan. In the ad, Miss Quinlan is carrying two baskets with three puppies and kittens in each. With the garden in the background, it almost looks like she’s just come back from picking them.
