Beer In Ads #3216: Denmark’s Biggest Package

December 23, 2019 By Jay Brooks

Monday’s Christmas Eve Eve ad is for Tuborg, from fairly recently. From the late 1800s until the 1970s, poster art really came into its own, and in Europe a lot of really cool posters, many of them for breweries, were produced. I’ve been posting vintage European posters all year, and for the remainder of December will feature holiday-themed posters of all ages. This poster was created for Tuborg’s Christmas beer, Julebryg, which they release each year on the first Friday in November. To my delight, they call the release date “J-Dag” or “J-Day.” For a number of years, they’ve used the same cartoon imagery and personalities in the ads, and seem to have a lot of fun with them. This one is from 2015. The text reads: “Vind 30,000 kroner i Danmarks Største Pakkeleg,” which translates as “Win 30,000 kroner in Denmark’s Biggest Package.” I assume whatever year this was from there was a contest of some sort, especially since there’s a QR code on the bottle.

This one is from around 2014, I believe. The text reads: “Pas på, Allan! Der falder sne på dansegulvet i aften,” which translates as “Watch out, Allan! Snow is falling on the dance floor tonight.”

Friday’s ad is for Guinness, from fairly recently. From the late 1800s until the 1970s, poster art really came into its own, and in Europe a lot of really cool posters, many of them for breweries, were produced. I’ve been posting vintage European posters all year, and for the remainder of December will feature holiday-themed posters of all ages. This poster was created by an unknown marketing firm, but appears to be inspired by the John Gilroy artwork of the earlier 20th century.

Friday’s ad is for beer at some sort of special celebration, such as New Year’s Eve or Mardi Gras, from 1950. From the late 1800s until the 1960s, poster art really came into its own, and in Europe a lot of really cool posters, many of them for breweries, were produced. This is part of a series of posters promoting beer by the German Brewers Association in the mid-20th century. It was created by German artist Thomas Abeking.

Beer In Ads #2860: The Champagne Of Bottle Beer

December 31, 2018 By Jay Brooks

Monday’s ad is for Miller Brewing, from 1905. This ad show the cork being popped on a Miller High Life bottle and their Girl in the Moon flying out of the bottle. I don’t know how much you have to drink before this happens when you open a bottle of beer, but I aim to find out. Happy New Year!

Beer In Ads #2865: Christmas In The Country With Miller High Life

December 25, 2018 By Jay Brooks

Tuesday’s Chrosmas ad is for Miller Brewing, from the 1950s. This ad features a horse-drawn sleigh moving through a snow-filled country setting and passing a barn with “Miller High Life Milwaukee Beer” painted on the side a silo. The ad also includes the text. “Christmas in the country is a pleasure that everyone would enjoy … but wherever you are, you can relax and enjoy life with Miller High Life.”

“Christmas is not a time nor a season, but a state of mind. To cherish peace and goodwill, to be plenteous in mercy, is to have the real spirit of Christmas.”

             — Calvin Coolidge

‘Twas Christmas broach’d the mightiest ale; ’twas Christmas told the merriest tale; a Christmas gambol oft could cheer the poor man’s heart through half the year.

The original image, which I doctored, was the cover of a 1950 issue of Guinness Time, “a quarterly publication by the Guinness company [that] was distributed to all Guinness staff.” I found it at Bygone Bodiam, a very cool website covering old time Bodiam, a hop growing area in England. There are also a number of great nostalgic photographs of the local hops industry back in the day.
