Beer In Ads #1764: The Rheingold Christmas Tree

December 19, 2015 By Jay Brooks

Saturday’s ad is for Rheingold Beer, from 1957, and features Miss Rheingold from that year, Margie McNally. It’s a simple ad, with Miss Rheingold out on a crisp winter’s day, wearing a warm white winter coat, and choosing a tree for Christmas. Hopefully, this isn’t the one she settled on, as it looks more fit for Charlie Brown.

Beer In Ads #1747: Ringing The Bell

December 2, 2015 By Jay Brooks

Wednesday’s ad is for Rheingold Beer, from 1946, and features Miss Rheingold from that year, Rita Daigle. Dressed up at a fancy dude ranch, she’s ringing the dinner bell, with an appetizer of Rheingold beer. Which is apparently “beer as beer should taste.”

Beer In Ads #1726: Grantland Rice For Rheingold

November 1, 2015 By Jay Brooks

Sunday’s ad is for Rheingold beer, from 1940. Grantland Rice was a famous sportwriter, apparently known for his “elegant prose.” It’s also his birthday today. He wrote the sentiment that it’s not whether you won or lost, “But how you played the Game,” in a poem entitled “Alumnus Football.” He also did this ad for the “quicker quencher,” an odd nickname if ever there was one.

Beer In Ads #1606: 4th Of July Snowman

July 4, 2015 By Jay Brooks

Saturday’s ad is for Rheingold Beer, from 1937. This was an unusual ad for independence day, using a snowman in July to talk about “the glorious Fourth.” And the snowman is lighting a firecracker, it must have really stood out in a magazine or newspaper published in the summer. And another oddity: there’s a circle containing the pjrase “beer is best,” which was a phrase being used at the time in Great Britain by a brewers trade group so it’s interesting to see it in an American ad during the same time period.

Beer In Ads #1567: The Duke For Rheingold

May 26, 2015 By Jay Brooks

Tuesday’s ad is for Rheingold Beer, from 1953. Today is the birthday of actor John Wayne, who would be 108 if he was still alive. During his lifetime, he did commercials for several beer companies, including this ad for Rheingold Beer.

The image below is a little clearer, but the bottom of the ad has been clipped.
