Beer In Ads #3038: Zähringer Bock

June 28, 2019 By Jay Brooks

Friday’s ad is for Zähringer Bock, from 1910. From the late 1800s until the 1960s, poster art really came into its own, and in Europe a lot of really cool posters, many of them for breweries, were produced. This poster was made for Brasserie du Cardinal, in Fribourg, Switzerland, which was founded in 1788 by François Piller. In 1991 (though one source says 1996), it was acquired by Feldschlösschen, which is owned by the Carlsberg Group. I have no idea who the artist was who created it, but the name of the beer is interesting. “Berthold IV Von Zähringer was the founder of the city of Fribourg in Switzerland in 1157.”

Thursday’s ad is for Feldschlösschen Bock, from 1940. From the late 1800s until the 1960s, poster art really came into its own, and in Europe a lot of really cool posters, many of them for breweries, were produced. This poster was made for the Brauerei Feldschlösschen, in Rheinfelden, Switzerland, which was founded in 1876 as the Wüthrich & Roniger Brewery. In 1890, the company was reorganized and renamed Feldschlösschen. Apparently, the brewery is in the shape of a castle and Feldschlösschen means ‘small castle in the fields’ in German.” Today, the brewery is owned by the Carlsberg Group. The artist who created this poster was named Koller, and one source claims it was Rudolf Koller, a Swiss fine artist, but given that he died in 1905, I don’t see how that’s possible, and it must have been another artist named Koller.

Wednesday’s ad is for Luzern Bockbier, from 1935. From the late 1800s until the 1960s, poster art really came into its own, and in Europe a lot of really cool posters, many of them for breweries, were produced. This poster was made for the Vereinigte Brauereien Luzern, or the United Breweries Lucerne, in Switzerland, which was formed in 1922 by the merger of two local breweries and in 1937 was renamed the Lucerne Brewery Eichhof, and in 1960 shortened again to Brewery Eichhof. Since 2008, it has been part of Heineken. I don’t know who the artist was that created the poster.

Tuesday’s ad is for Urania Zürich, from 1950. From the late 1800s until the 1960s, poster art really came into its own, and in Europe a lot of really cool posters, many of them for breweries, were produced. This poster was made for the Urania Zürich Bier and Speise Restaurant, a Swiss “beer and food restaurant” located in Zürich, Switzerland. I don’t know if it’s still a going concern, but there is a Urania Sternwarte in Zürich, which is a telescope observatory, so that’s likely the area where it was located. The poster was created by Swiss artist Alfred Koella.

Monday’s ad is for Löwenbrau, from 1927. From the late 1800s until the 1960s, poster art really came into its own, and in Europe a lot of really cool posters, many of them for breweries, were produced. This poster was made for Löwenbräu Zurich, a Swiss brewery created by a merger of two breweries in 1890. Brauerei Hürlimann bought the brewery in 1984, closing the facility two years later, but continued to produce the brands for a few years afterward. The tagline translates as “Drink Lowenbrau Beer from Zürich” and the poster was also created by Swiss artist Otto Baumberger.

Sunday’s ad is for Walsheim Weisse, from 1930. From the late 1800s until the 1960s, poster art really came into its own, and in Europe a lot of really cool posters, many of them for breweries, were produced. This poster was made for the Walsheim-Brauerei, located near the western edge of Germany. It was founded by Friedrich Christian Schmidt in 1848, but was destroyed by airstrikes during the second world war. It was created by Swiss artist Otto Baumberger.

Thursday’s ad is for Zum Essen, from 1963. I believe it’s from Switzerland. From the late 1800s until the 1960s, poster art really came into its own, and in Europe a lot of really cool posters, many of them for breweries, were produced. This poster is for Zum Essen Ein Bier, which Google translates as “To eat a beer,” although I suspect that’s not quite right. The poster was created by Swiss artist Paul Trauffer.

Beer In Ads #3001: Red Glove With Golden Beer

May 22, 2019 By Jay Brooks

Wednesday’s ad is a bit of a temporary departure from the May theme of Italian brewery posters, because yesterday was my 3000th Beer in Ads post and I wanted to do something special, and this one is the sister poster to that one. This ad is also from 1957. From the late 1800s until the 1960s, poster art really came into its own, and in Europe a lot of really cool posters, many of them for breweries, were produced. I’m not sure exactly what this poster was advertising, although it may have been part of the efforts of the Swiss Brewery Association, which was creating advertising promoting beer in general during this time period. The poster was created by Peter Birkhäuser, who “was a Swiss poster artist, portraitist, and visionary painter, noted for his paintings illustrating imagery from dreams in the context of analytical psychology.”
