Beer In Ads #2428: Refreshingly Different!

October 13, 2017 By Jay Brooks

Friday’s ad is for Schlitz, from 1945. “Just the Kiss of the Hops” was a popular slogan used by Schlitz for several decades. It’s meant to express that their beer had no bitterness, but they definitely had some fun with it over the years. In this ad, another of the weird bear ads, a female bear (you can tell because of the apron) is skating across a pond of ice, delivering a tray with a bottle of Schlitz beer and two glasses. That definitely is different, although I’m not sure about the refreshing part.

Beer In Ads #2427: Tell Them We’ll Have Schlitz

October 12, 2017 By Jay Brooks

Thursday’s ad is for Schlitz, from 1945. “Just the Kiss of the Hops” was a popular slogan used by Schlitz for several decades. It’s meant to express that their beer had no bitterness, but they definitely had some fun with it over the years. In this ad, a couple is calling friends to invite them over to play cards (based on the man holding a deck of cards in his hands). Trying to seal the deal, he whispers in his wife’s ear, “Tell them we’ll have Schlitz.” That should do it.

Beer Words: Gambrinous

October 12, 2017 By Jay Brooks

beer-word
This morning, Quite Interesting tweeted an obscure beer word that I was not familiar with: Gambrinous. The Collins Dictionary, and others, defines it simply as “full of beer,” but I much prefer the more elegant definition from the Urban Dictionary; “To be content and happy due to a stomach full of beer.”

October 11, 2017 By Jay Brooks

Wednesday’s ad is for Schlitz, from 1945. “Just the Kiss of the Hops” was a popular slogan used by Schlitz for several decades. It’s meant to express that their beer had no bitterness, but they definitely had some fun with it over the years. In this ad, the same woman from a previous ad is shown very close-up, showing just a portion of her face puckering up to kiss some hop cones.

Beer In Ads #2425: The Final Touch

October 10, 2017 By Jay Brooks

Tuesday’s ad is for Schlitz, from 1947. “Just the Kiss of the Hops” was a popular slogan used by Schlitz for several decades. It’s meant to express that their beer had no bitterness, but they definitely had some fun with it over the years. In this ad, a woman with an impossibly thin waistline is preparing for a dinner party and the final touch is a bottle of Schlitz placed on the table just so. Well, she didn’t place it there, of course, that job naturally fell to the maid. Now the “table is set for success.”

Beer In Ads #2424: Late Night Bear Snack

October 9, 2017 By Jay Brooks

Monday’s ad is for Schlitz, from 1946. “Just the Kiss of the Hops” was a popular slogan used by Schlitz for several decades. It’s meant to express that their beer had no bitterness, but they definitely had some fun with it over the years. In this ad, an odd one, a small bear cub wearing a nightshirt, slippers and a nightcap, and carrying a candle, is standing in front of an open refrigerator. Apparently, a late night thirst overtook the bear, and he needed a beer. That’s one civilized beer, er… bear.

Sunday’s ad is for Schlitz, from 1946. “Just the Kiss of the Hops” was a popular slogan used by Schlitz for several decades. It’s meant to express that their beer had no bitterness, but they definitely had some fun with it over the years. Beer In Ads #2420: Anticipation

October 5, 2017 By Jay Brooks

Thursday’s ad is for Schlitz, from 1945. “Just the Kiss of the Hops” was a popular slogan used by Schlitz for several decades. It’s meant to express that their beer had no bitterness, but they definitely had some fun with it over the years. In this ad, a woman in her kitchen is calling out the window to tell her husband that dinner is ready. Behind her, the table is set and there’s a bottle of Schlitz and a beer glass set on the table in anticipation. Because “Today more than ever when men are working especially hard, a bottle of Schlitz brings welcome relaxation at the end of the day.”
