Beer In Ads #1159: Enjoy A Double Diamond Today

April 12, 2014 By Jay Brooks

Saturday’s ad is for the British beer by Inde Coope, Double Diamond Burton Pale Ale, from probably the 1950s. The ad shows a nice illustration of a tray with a bottle and two glasses, one full, with a second bottle about to be opened. But I confess I’m confused about this bit of the ad copy. “Get outside a Double Diamond and you feel more like yourself again.” Is “get outside” a British idiom for drink a beer?

Beer In Ads #1157: Go First Class

April 10, 2014 By Jay Brooks

Thursday’s ad is for Miller High Life, from the 1950s. Another of Miller’s minimalist ads, this one is set in a backyard barbecue. They’re making kabobs, but I especially love that they converted a wicker cart into a cooler.

Beer In Film #100: Schlafly Beerd Bowl 2014

April 10, 2014 By Jay Brooks

brookston-film
Today’s beer film is a fun little video created by the St. Louis Brewing Co. — a.k.a. Schlafly — as an alternative to this year’s Super Bowl halftime, what they called “the ultimate Super Bowl Halftime extravaganza,” or Beerd Bowl! “It’s the Brewers’s beards from Schlafly Bottleworks versus the beards from the Schlafly Tap Room in a smack down, drag out, no holds barred competition for both bragging rights and the Limbeardy Trophy.”

Beer In Ads #1156: Someone Didn’t Wait!

April 9, 2014 By Jay Brooks

Wednesday’s ad is for Narragansett, from some time in the late 1950s or early 1960s, if I had to guess. I base that on other ads which during that time period seem to show a wider range of beer glasses than later ads.

Beer In Film #99: Beoir, A Tale of Ireland’s Craft Ale

April 9, 2014 By Jay Brooks

brookston-film
Today’s beer film is trailer for Beoir: A Tale of Irelands Craft Ale which looks like it could be a very interesting, cool film about Ireland’s growing craft beer scene. Here’s the description of the film:

Beoir, (the Irish word for beer), is a short film about the emerging Irish craft brewery scene, showcasing The Donegal brewing company, Innishmacsaint brewing company, Mescan brewing company, Kinnegar brewing company and Poker Tree brewing company. These new mainly farmhouse breweries are based on the wonderful green island of Ireland. This film showcases not only the breweries but the Island of Ireland itself. Listen to the brewers tell their story in their own words and follow them on their journey at the very start of this emerging craft brewing scene in Ireland. From under Ireland’s holy mountain Croagh Patrick to the lakes of Fermanagh, Beoir is a fascinating and beautifully shot film.

Beer In Ads #1155: We Have Our Head Examined Every Month

April 8, 2014 By Jay Brooks

Tuesday’s ad is for Schlitz, from some time in the 1960s, and it’s a nice double meaning showing a bottle of Schlitz on a psychiatrist’s couch having its head examined, but of course the head they’re really referring to is the beer’s head.
