Where Do Beer Nuts Come From?

January 15, 2013 By Jay Brooks

paperclip
These are pretty funny. Terry Border runs a website called Bent Objects, where he creates funny dioramas using everyday objects and bent paperclips. In these two, apparently St. Pauli Girl isn’t the wholesome gal everybody thinks she is. Instead she’s terrorizing some colleagues for their nuts … beer nuts, that is.

The first is from 2008, and is titled Yeah, This is Where Those Come From.

Beer-Nuts_bent-objects

The first one also includes these puns.

It’s also how light beers are made here in the U.S., but personally, I only like a full bodied beer.

She had often been described as a little bitter.

She was cold one, that’s for sure.

And this one’s from Valentine’s Day, 2011.

Megan Fox For Brahma Beer

January 14, 2013 By Jay Brooks

brahma
Today I saw in the UK Sun that American actor Megan Fox is doing ads for Brahma, the Brazilian Budweiser, an especially accurate association since Brahma is part of Anheuser-Busch InBev. Why do we care? We don’t, but I’m game to look at a couple of ads with Megan Fox in them. Isn’t that why advertisers chose her? Of course, it’s still a tasteless, flavorless beer.

As Mais Gostosas do Carnival (The Hottest Carnival)

brahma-fox-2

Is it just me, or does that beer have his arm around Fox? Is the beer wearing sunglasses because he doesn’t want to be seen with Megan Fox?

Convidando Megan Fox Pra Uma Brahma (Inviting Megan Fox for a Brahma)

brahma-fox-1

And here she is going off to have a picnic. According to the Sun, she’s flying down to Rio to do a commercial and pose for some more ads.

Although humorously enough, a few years ago the hipster appeared more partial to Pabst Blue Ribbon. This was taken by paparazzi in 2009. Ah, sex and beer. What’s not to love. It seems to me, the big brewers follow a variation of the old lawyer’s adage. “When the law is on your side, argue the law. When the facts are on your side, argue the facts. When neither the facts nor the law are on your side, make an ad hominem attack.” In the brewer’s world it’s more along these lines. “When the beer tastes good, promote the beer. When the brewery has personality, promote the brewer. When the beer has neither, promote a celebrity, a cartoon, or both.”

The Science Of The Spins

December 31, 2012 By Jay Brooks

spins
Given that today is New Year’s Eve — what I generally refer to as Amateur Drinking Day — I thought this science lesson from Mental Floss on what causes the spins was an appropriate topic. In Why Does Alcohol Cause the Spins?, author Matt Soniak explains that sometimes after an evening’s drinking that the room appears to be spinning out of control. You lie down, but it doesn’t help. No matter what you do, the vertigo persists, causing great discomfort and often the loss of lunch, dinner and everything else that used to be in your stomach. Here’s why.

The spins happen because of an odd effect alcohol has on your ears — specifically, on three tiny, fluid-filled structures called the semicircular canals. Inside each of these canals is a fluid called endolymph and a gelationous structure called the cupula, which is filled with cells covered in fine, hair-like stereocilia.

As you move around, the movement of the endolymph lags behind the more solid cupula, distorting and bending it — and those little hairs. When the hairs bend, the electrical signal they send to your brain is altered, helping you to make sense of the rotations your head experiences on each of the three planes the canals sit on — movements up and down, left and right and backward and forward — and keep your balance.

Booze throws this system out of whack. Alcohol thins the blood, and when boozy blood travels to the inner ear, it creates a density difference between the cupula and the fluid in the canals, and distorts the cupula’s shape. The little hairs bend and send a signal to your brain that tells it you’re rotating when you’re really not, and this illusion of motion makes it seem like the room is spinning.

Some of the things that you most want to do when you’re good and drunk, like lie down and close your eyes, make the sensation worse, since you don’t have any visual or physical cues to counteract the false sense of motion. Looking at a fixed object and keeping your feet planted on the ground can help lessen the effect, but there’s no real way to stop it.

So now you know. The bad news is there’s pretty much nothing you can do about it apart from practicing moderation and drinking plenty of water. If I know I’ll be drinking a lot, I try to eat a hearty meal beforehand, drink a glass of water in between each beer, snack during the party and take some Advil and Vitamin B before going to sleep. Happy New Year everybody.

Maybe this will help; maybe not.

Vintage Beer Sweaters

December 26, 2012 By Jay Brooks

sweater
Christmas, of course, is the time when ugly sweaters are not only finally acceptable, but at this time of year they’re downright mandatory. Happily artist AJ Fosik began collecting and rescuing some beer-themed ugly sweaters. According to Trend Hunter, “Fosik says that all of these knits were ‘rescued from moldy basements, plucked from dingy backwaters and ripped from the backs of greasy shitleopards.'” Below, for example, is one from his collection, from Olympia Beer.

Fosik-olympia

And here’s another one, for Carling Black Label.

Fosik-blk-label

Unfortunately, Fosik no longer maintains his Flickr gallery, where the sweater collection originally lived, but luckily the collection went viral and it still lives in that series of tubes we call the interwebs. You can see his art at the Jonathan Levine Gallery and the David B. Smith Gallery. Below is a slideshow of my Flickr gallery where I think I found most, if not all, of Fosik’s collected beer sweaters, and I even added a few others that I found along the way. To see them in their full color, full size glory, view the galley full screen by clicking the button with four arrows on it. Enjoy.

UPDATE 12.30: I just heard from an online store, Brew Town Gear, that has several of the vintage beer sweaters for sale, along with some similar satin jackets. They also have a brick and mortar store in La Crosse, Wisconsin. Stock up now for next Christmas.

UPDATE 11:11:14: Brew Town Gear is apparently now Bar Closet, and has expanded its selection and now carries “even more interesting vintage items.”

We Didn’t Repeal Prohibition So …

December 5, 2012 By Jay Brooks

lucky-bucket
Regular readers of the Bulletin know my feelings about low-calorie light diet beer, so this poster by Lucky Bucket Brewing in Nebraska gave me quite a chuckle. “We didn’t repeal Prohibition so we could drink light beer.” Amen, brother. Truer words were never spoken. Happy Repeal Day, everybody.

Spill-Proof Beer

November 12, 2012 By Jay Brooks

hahn
As far as I can tell, the Australian beer brand Hahn Brewing has some of the cleverest beer commercials around. I suspect there’s not much to the beer, even though it was founded by Chuck Hahn, who also started Malt Shovel Brewing (a.k.a. James Squire), and both are now owned by Lion Nathan. But the beers appear to variations on light lagers, running the gambit from Hahn Super Dry, Premium, Premium Light to Hahn Ice. I’ve had the pleasure of judging at GABF and the World Beer Cup with Chuck several times. At any rate, this ad is for Spill-Proof Beer. Enjoy.

I happened upon this animated gif from the Simpsons yesterday entitled “Homer’s Night Out.” It’s a short self-contained story of drinking and forgetting told in the style of a silent film. Enjoy.

The Formula For The Perfect Pint

October 19, 2012 By Jay Brooks

math
I can only assume that the UK pub chain Taylor Walker is, in the appropriate British parlance, taking the piss, with their commissioning of Mindlab to discover the formula for “the perfect pint.” Though there is a Mind Lab at the University of Sussex, this bit of news is not listed in their news or press section. At any rate, they claim to have “used complex mathematical modelling techniques to discover what conditions are required to enjoy the perfect pint.”
e-pint

So what is the formula for a perfect pint?

Here goes: E = -(0.62T2 + 39.2W2 + 62.4P2) + (21.8T + 184.4W + 395.4P + 94.5M – 90.25V) + 50(S + F + 6.4)

  • E is a factor describing overall enjoyment.
  • T is the ambient temperature in degrees Celsius.
  • W is the number of days until you are required back at work.
  • P is the number of people with whom you are drinking.
  • M is related to your mood whilst drinking the pint.
  • V is related to the volume of the music being played.
  • S and F are related to the availability of snacks and food.

Without the number variants, so slightly simpler, it’s E = -(T2+W2+P2) + (T+W+P+M-V) + 50(S+F+6.4), though it’s hardly E = MC2. Below a presumed “scientist” — he is after all, wearing a lab coat and surrounded by books and beakers — explains it all:

Fermentation Films: A Recap

September 25, 2012 By Jay Brooks

film
The Twitterverse was abuzz this morning, and the rest of the day, with a clever little game of substituting a beer term for a word in a movie title to come up with what the hashtag termed a “Fermentation Film.” Usually it’s the adult film world that has the best titles, but there were some pretty clever ones thrown down today by a wide range of people. As far as I can tell, it began around 3:00 p.m. in Great Britain (7:00 A.M. Pacific), before migrating across the pond to the United States. The flurry went on for far longer than any hashtag I’ve ever seen that wasn’t event-based. For nearly ten hours, the beerified film titles kept coming, finally slowing down by the end of the work day, California time.

Below is a list of all of the Fermentation Films tweeted with the hashtag #fermentationfilms, along with the person who came up with it first. I worked backwards, so if you tweeted one and there’s a different name next to it, then your tweet was not the first one with that title. The winner of most duplicated has to be “Yeast of Eden.” I think I saw a dozen of those. I kicked out the duplicates, along with a few that were too close, and also didn’t include a few that either were actual film titles or ones that in my admittedly questionable judgement I didn’t understand or didn’t find worthy. That still left a staggering 440 455 fermentation film titles. [Update: I promised myself I wouldn’t go back, but there were a few new ones I couldn’t bear to leave out, so I updated it. The list is now current through September 26 at 11:00 AM PDT.] There’s a few that still make me laugh out loud and a few that made me groan, but they’re all pretty entertaining. Enjoy.
