Nature vs. Nurture As A Cause of Alcoholism

October 1, 2013 By Jay Brooks

dna-2
Since I’ve been featuring a new infographic on the Bulletin every day this year, I’ve started getting a number of e-mails from people and companies trying to promote their own sites using infographics, offering them up as potential ones for me to use. I got one today created by Clarity Way, a recovery center in Hanover, Pennsylvania. In reality, this one is a video that uses graphics similar to those found in infographics to tell its story. Perhaps I’m being overly strict, but I think an “infographic” should be a static image, or at a minimum interactive, but starting with a graphic, with info. It’s right there in the name. Still, there’s some interesting info here, though since they’re trying to sell rehab, I think they’ve inflated some of the data. For example, they claim “7 million children live in a household where at least one parent is dependent on or has abused alcohol.” [emphasis added.] Dependent is one thing, but given the modern definition of binge drinking, almost anyone could be said to have “abused alcohol” at least once in their life. Frankly, none of the statistics seem that terrible to me. There’s an equal chance that alcoholism comes from heredity or from your environment, but only 8.3% of people “suffer from alcohol abuse or dependence.” That wording is also odd. You can certainly suffer from alcohol dependence, but how can you be said to suffer from abuse? Have five drinks in a row, and you’ve abused alcohol, according to most health agencies and neo-prohibitionist groups. Remove those people who have ever “abused” alcohol once, or even occasionally but are not dependent on it, and that number, I suspect, would drop precipitously.

Not sure how I missed this, but a couple of years ago Lagunitas posted a video showing techniques for Mastering The Lagunitas Butterfly Bottle Opener. Shortly thereafter, they posted a second video showing advanced techniques for using their butterfly beer opener.

Oregon Brewed Film

September 27, 2013 By Jay Brooks

I got an e-mail last evening from David Panton, letting me know that his short film, Oregon Brewed, is now available to watch on Vimeo.

Main Title_Promo

It runs just over twenty minutes, and has done well in some local film festivals. It was chosen as the Best Oregon Film at the Oregon Independent Film Festival and won “Best of Oregon” at the Oregon Film Awards. Here’s the description of the film.

Beer has made a lasting historical mark throughout history. Today in Oregon, beer continues to make history. The unique culture of brewers and beer drinkers in Oregon is an important part not only to the beer itself, but to the people that live here as well. This documentary on Oregon craft beer looks at a few different breweries all different sizes and ages, to find out what really makes beer in Oregon unique.

The film features four Oregon breweries: Ambacht, Full Sail, Laurelwood and Oregon Trail. Enjoy.

The House Of Beer With Every Sink, Bath & Shower On Tap

September 18, 2013 By Jay Brooks

beer-tap-ani
A group of New Zealanders played a massive prank on a friend of theirs by sneaking into his house and re-plumbing every faucet and shower head so that beer, not water, came out no matter where he turned it on. They used kegged beer hidden behind walls and also installed hidden cameras to catch their friend’s reaction to the fun. Here’s how they describe it on YouTube.

Me and the boys played a bit of a joke on our mate Russ. Kegs of beer have been plumbed into every tap in the house, with loads of cameras to catch the action. Took us all day to set up but it was worth it when the icy cool beer came pouring out.

Thanks to Bulletin reader Russ R. for sending me the link. Check out the story below.

Rhymes With Big Rock

July 18, 2013 By Jay Brooks

Okay, be warned, this isn’t for the easily offended and it’s somewhat juvenile and more than a little lascivious. But it’s also funny. You also do have to stick with it all the way to the end. And remember, I did warn you.

How To Open A Beer Compilation

July 10, 2013 By Jay Brooks

opener-metal
My brother-in-law sent me this video this morning. There are a million ways to open a beer bottle, and this video includes a lot of different ones, including a few that seem pretty impractical (rendering the beer undrinkable) and some that look downright dangerous, but then there also some clever and funny ones, too. Enjoy.
