Beer In Ads #509: Brewed With Pure Rocky Mountain Spring Water

December 29, 2011 By Jay Brooks

Thursday’s ad is for Coors, from 1977 — the year I graduated from high school. Showing a pilsner glass by a mountain stream, I love their suggestion. “Refrigerate to retain brewery fresh flavor.” Did people really need to be told that? I know Coors’ has been cold-obsessed for a long time, but were there people who were unaware that beer should be stored cool? Certainly we knew it in our household. My parents had a second refrigerator in the basement that always had beer in it, along with overflow from the upstairs kitchen refrigerator.

Brewing Up: WSJ Beer Sales Infographic

December 29, 2011 By Jay Brooks

wall-street-journal
The Wall Street Journal, through their WSJ News Graphics twitter feed, posted the following graphic on TwitPic, showing yearly beer sales through November 2011.

wsj-brewing-up-2011

This data is from Nielsen and the Brewers Association. A couple of weeks ago I posted similar numbers, but with data from Symphony IRI, in Beer Sales By Style Through Thanksgiving. According to Nielsen’s data, total beer volume was down 2%, while craft beer was up 16.4%. By dollars, total beer was up just 0.3%, while craft beer was up 17.5%. Nice.

Beer In Ads #508: Reward Yourself With Genesee

December 28, 2011 By Jay Brooks

Wednesday’s ad is for Genesee Beer, from 1961 — 50 years ago. Showing a very odd-looking couple in front of an antique car — Model T? [What I don’t know about cars would fill a book.] They just look way too happy, especially him. He looks deranged. Great copy: “Reward yourself with Genesee: enjoyment pure and simple. Beer with a bracing bonus of brightness in every bottle to make it fresher and friendlier … naturally more refreshing.”

Beer In Ads #507: Falstaff’s Got Something

December 27, 2011 By Jay Brooks

Tuesday’s holiday ad is for Falstaff, from 1950. With a great tagline, “Falstaff’s Got Something!, I also love how they characterize the beer. “It’s Dry, Light but Lively.” And it sure looks that couple has been hitting the bottle as they put up their decorations. A wink and a nod ….

Beer Birthday: Rick Sellers

December 27, 2011 By Jay Brooks

sellers
Today is the birthday of Rick Sellers, former beer director of DRAFT magazine and former parter with brewer Peter Hoey in the Odonata Beer Co., which sadly didn’t quite get off the ground. These days he’s back writing online at Pacific Brew News. Join me in wishing Rick a very happy birthday.

Mission Rock Cafe To Become Brewery In 2012

December 27, 2011 By Jay Brooks

MoMos
Yet another new brewery is apparently coming to San Francisco next year. According to the San Francisco Chronicle and SF Weekly, the Mission Rock Cafe, in China Basin not to far from the stadium where the Giants play, will soon become a brewery. Local publican Peter Osborne, who currently owns MoMo’s, Pete’s Tavern and Pedro’s Cantina, will take over the waterside restaurant on January 1. He’ll then start renovating it with an eye toward re-opening it sometime during the summer as Mission Rock Brewery and Oyster Bar.

The Philadelphia History of Beer

December 27, 2011 By Jay Brooks

philly-beer
This was created back in May, but it escaped my notice. April Kuhn created a cool poster for Drink Philly entitled The Philadelphia History of Beer. According to the website, “[w]hile it doesn’t cover everything that’s occurred in Philadelphia since its founding, it does cover a lot — and it shows why this truly is one of the world’s greatest spots for beer.” If you’d like one of the poster for your very own, they’re on sale online for $10 right now.

Beer In Ads #506: For Festive Occasions … Beer Is Best

December 26, 2011 By Jay Brooks

Monday’s holiday ad — it’s Boxing Day — is from 1930s Britain and is, I believe, an industry advertisement extolling the virtues of beer. And this one is suggesting that even for festive occasions, beer is best. Happy Boxing Day.
