Beer In Ads #3044: Uncle Sam Wants Your Cans

July 4, 2019 By Jay Brooks

Thursday’s 4th of July ad is for Miller High Life, from 1974. From the late 1800s until the 1960s, poster art really came into its own, and in Europe a lot of really cool posters, many of them for breweries, were produced. But because today is American Independence Day, I thought I should share an ad from an American brewery. This poster was made for Miller Brewing Co., and the image of Uncle Sam holding a can High Life is just a detail from a poster created to promote recycling of their beer cans at the height of the Ecology movement in the 1970s. But the image is pretty cool, although I haven’t been able to figure out who the artist was that made it.

Below is most of the entire poster, from an old eBay listing and it appears they were focusing on three months at the end of 1974, September through November, with dates when they wanted people to “Join the Miller Pick-Em Up” campaign, presumably to stop littering, at least of their beer cans.

Beer Birthday: Gary Gillman

July 4, 2019 By Jay Brooks

beer-et-seq
Today is the 69th birthday of Gary Gillman, an attorney in Toronto, who also writes online at Beer et seq. He describes himself as a beer and food writer with a historical focus in these areas. He’s also published full-length, referenced articles in beer historical and food journals and he’s done two brewing collaborations with Toronto’s Amsterdam Brewery, to recreate an 1870 English AK Bitter recipe. In addition, he’s been a beer enthusiast for over forty years, and started participating online as soon as that became viable. In his daily life, he represents several breweries, as well as other food and beverage businesses, so brings a unique perspective to his writing. He’s also contributed articles to several beer magazines. Join me in wishing Gary a very happy birthday.

Wednesday’s ad is for Trinkt Sternenberg Bier, from 1907. From the late 1800s until the 1960s, poster art really came into its own, and in Europe a lot of really cool posters, many of them for breweries, were produced. This poster was made for Actien-Brauerei Zum Sternenberg, in Sternenberg, Switzerland, located in the Canton of Zürich. The artist who created the poster was Swiss painter Burkhard Mangold, and it was printed by Wassermann & Schäublin of Basel.

Tuesday’s ad is for Brauerei-Stocken, from around 1900. From the late 1800s until the 1960s, poster art really came into its own, and in Europe a lot of really cool posters, many of them for breweries, were produced. This poster was made for Brauerei-Stocken, in Bruggen, Switzerland, located in the Canton of St. Gallen. It was founded in 1784 by Joseph Moosser, but closed in 1973. The artist who created the poster was Swiss painter Anton Trieb.

Beer In Ads #3041: Brasserie de Delémont

Monday’s ad is for Brasserie de Delémont, from around 1900. From the late 1800s until the 1960s, poster art really came into its own, and in Europe a lot of really cool posters, many of them for breweries, were produced. This poster was made for Brasserie de Delémont, in Delémont, Switzerland, which was founded in 1900 by Albert Gürtler. In 1907 it became the Jura Brewery and in 1964 the Warteck Brewery. I’m not sure when the brewery closed but by 2008 they were growing commercial mushrooms in one of the brewery buildings, and the following year converted some of the buildings to a luxury hotel. In 2015, the Brasserie Blanche Pierre, or White Stone Brewery opened in Delémont, and I’m not sure who they’re related but it appears they are somehow affiliated with their predecessor. I’m not sure who the artist is who created the poster, but it was printed by Orell Füssli, in Zürich.

Beer In Ads #3040: Cardinal 1788

Sunday’s ad is for Brasserie du Cardinal, from 1969. From the late 1800s until the 1960s, poster art really came into its own, and in Europe a lot of really cool posters, many of them for breweries, were produced. This poster was made for Brasserie du Cardinal, in Fribourg, Switzerland, which was founded in 1788 by François Piller. In 1991 (though one source says 1996), it was acquired by Feldschlösschen, which is owned by the Carlsberg Group. This is a later poster created by husband and wife design team Gabriel and Anne Humair, and although it’s simpler than a lot of the earlier posters, it still seems very effective, to me, and merges the new with the old.

Beer In Ads #3039: Brasserie Du Cardinal

Saturday’s ad is for Brasserie du Cardinal, from 1905. This is an illustration of the brewery created in 1905 and had something to do with building a new brewery, I believe. The dates listed on the poster are strange, but perhaps a new brewery was built in 1837, since their original founding was 1788.

Beer In Ads #3038: Zähringer Bock

Friday’s ad is for Zähringer Bock, from 1910. I have no idea who the artist was who created it, but the name of the beer is interesting. “Berthold IV Von Zähringer was the founder of the city of Fribourg in Switzerland in 1157.”

Beer In Ads #3037: Feldschlösschen Bock

Thursday’s ad is for Feldschlösschen Bock, from 1940. From the late 1800s until the 1960s, poster art really came into its own, and in Europe a lot of really cool posters, many of them for breweries, were produced. This poster was made for the Brauerei Feldschlösschen, in Rheinfelden, Switzerland, which was founded in 1876 as the Wüthrich & Roniger Brewery. In 1890, the company was reorganized and renamed Feldschlösschen. Apparently, the brewery is in the shape of a castle and Feldschlösschen means ‘small castle in the fields’ in German.” Today, the brewery is owned by the Carlsberg Group. The artist who created this poster was named Koller, and one source claims it was Rudolf Koller, a Swiss fine artist, but given that he died in 1905, I don’t see how that’s possible, and it must have been another artist named Koller.

Beer In Ads #3036: Luzern Bockbier

June 26, 2019 By Jay Brooks

Wednesday’s ad is for Luzern Bockbier, from 1935. From the late 1800s until the 1960s, poster art really came into its own, and in Europe a lot of really cool posters, many of them for breweries, were produced. This poster was made for the Vereinigte Brauereien Luzern, or the United Breweries Lucerne, in Switzerland, which was formed in 1922 by the merger of two local breweries and in 1937 was renamed the Lucerne Brewery Eichhof, and in 1960 shortened again to Brewery Eichhof. Since 2008, it has been part of Heineken. I don’t know who the artist was that created the poster.
