Extreme Ingredients

May 3, 2013 By Jay Brooks

beer-advocate-sq
Today’s infographic is from the Extreme Beer Festival that Beer Advocate puts on each year. It’s a cool flavor wheel showing many of the ingredients used in many extreme beers, and even has examples of beers using said ingredients in the outer ring of the wheel.

Beer In Ads #878: Come And Get It

May 2, 2013 By Jay Brooks

Thursday’s ad is for the U.S. Brewers Foundation, from 1956. Part of the “Beer Belongs” series, but beginning in 1956 they stopped numbering the ads, and unfortunately the series ended within a short time. This ad features a group of people camping by a lake with this great tagline. “Beer has its own friendly way of saying … ‘Come and get it.'” Indeed, “Beer Belongs — Enjoy it!”

Beer In Ads #877: The Goodness Of Malt Goes Far Beyond Delicious Flavor

May 1, 2013 By Jay Brooks

Wednesday’s ad is for the Barley and Malt Institute, from 1959. This is the third ad I have from the now defunct trade group for barley growers. In this one a man is being delivered actual beer while watching beer on television. How meta. I love the expression on his face. According to the ad, “The goodness of Malt goes far beyond delicious flavor.” Beyond “Fun Flavor,” “malt renews your energy” and also has “important B-complex vitamins.”

Glassware By Beer Style

May 1, 2013 By Jay Brooks

pint-glass-empty
Today’s infographic is a poster of the most common glassware for beer, with a list of styles below each glass that whoever created the poster believes would work best with each one. I’m not sure I agree with every choice, but at least some styles are listed with multiple glassware. That suggests that none of this is written in stone, which we all know, of course.

Beer In Ads #876: I’m Guarding That Gold—Rheingold

April 30, 2013 By Jay Brooks

Tuesday’s ad is for Rheingold, from 1956. The ad features actor Gregory Peck in Western setting, driving a Wells Fargo wagon. But the joke is he’s guarding liquid gold, in this case Rheingold beer.

Today’s infographic is another look at how to pour a glass of beer, created by Lee Hultang, and apparently he based it on information from Beer Advocate. It originally ran in a story in the Montreal Gazette in 2008.

Beer In Ads #875: Pabst Fish Fry

April 29, 2013 By Jay Brooks

Monday’s ad is for Pabst Blue Ribbon, from 1954. It’s from their “What’ll You Have” series, and this one shows three recently caught fish frying in a pan on the grill. Is is me or is that bucket of ice that the beer is cooling in a little close to the flame? That ice is going to melt pretty quickly.
