Beer In Art #165 Adriaen van Ostade’s The Violin Player

March 11, 2012 By Jay Brooks

art-beer
Today’s work of art is by the Dutch artist Adriaen van Ostade, a Golden Age painter of genre scenes. This is the second painting of his I’ve featured, the first being Ale House Interior. Like that one, van Ostade did a watercolor first, and it, too, is in the Morgan Library & Museum in New York City. But eventually, in 1673, it was completed as an oil painting on a wood panel. It usually called The Violin Player, though some call it A Violinist at a Farmhouse Door.

The painting today hangs in the Mauritshuis at The Hague in the Netherlands. The museum describes The Violinist:

A group of people are gathered in front of a simple house that seems to be a country inn. The atmosphere is one of gaiety, for an itinerant violinist has come to the door to play a tune, accompanied by the boy in the red jacket who plays the hurdy-gurdy. The music is enjoyed by young and old alike. In the middle of the picture, a man sits on a bench, his legs wide apart, holding a tankard of beer. In the doorway, a woman leans on the lower half of the door and two men look out, trying to catch a glimpse of the musicians. Some children hang about outside, enjoying the excitement. A tousled girl steadies a child wearing only one shoe, and a little boy makes contact with a dog.

I’m no expert on Dutch architecture, but the building doesn’t look like a farmhouse to me, as the Morgan Library insists. To me, at least, it looks more like a tavern door, and that better explains the man with the big tankard of beer.

To learn more about Adriaen van Ostade, Wikipedia and the J. Paul Getty Museum each have a biography of him, and you can also see links to his works online at ArtCyclopedia. The Web Gallery of Art and the Wikimedia Commons also feature a number of his paintings.

Marzen Madness 2012

March 11, 2012 By Jay Brooks

basketball
While not the biggest fan of college basketball, I still enjoy March Madness every year. The tournament is usually a fun diversion for a few weeks each year, so for the second straight year, I’ve set up a fantasy game, similar to fantasy football. It’s a bracket game through Yahoo which I call “Märzen Madness.” It doesn’t look like there’s a limit to the number of people who can play, so sign up and make your picks before March 15, which is when the first games take place. I’ll post and update standings each day there’s games played until a winner is declared.

To join Märzen Madness and play the Yahoo! Sports Tournament Pick’em game, just follow this instructions below. You’ll also need a Yahoo ID (which is free if you don’t already have one).

To accept the invitation, just follow this invitation link. For reference, here’s the group information.

Good luck everybody.

Congratulations to Paul B. — a.k.a. “DOZEer” — for being the winner of this year’s Brookston Football Pick’Em Pool. Paul also won in grand fashion last year, making him unquestionably the man to beat next season.

Guinness Ad #110: Seal Chasing

March 10, 2012 By Jay Brooks

guinness-toucan
Our 110th Guinness ad is from 1935, a variation on the seal and zookeeper theme, this horizontal ad featured the zookeeper in hot pursuit of a thieving seal, trying to make off with his pint of Guinness. The ad uses the familar “My Goodness, My Guinness” tagline.

Beer In Ads #560: H & G Simonds Ltd.

March 9, 2012 By Jay Brooks

Friday’s ad is for English brewery, H. & G. Simonds, Ltd. of Reading. I’m not sure of the age, but presumably it’s from the late 19th century when these great industrial portraits of breweries were so common. I love these pro-industrial love letters. A collection of them would make a great coffee table book.

Beer In Ads #559: The Talk Of The Town

March 8, 2012 By Jay Brooks

Thursday’s ad is New York’s Knickerbocker Beer, from Jacob Ruppert Brewing. The ad’s from 1952, and I can’t understand why the New York Knicks don’t wear uniforms like the Knickerbocker (who they were named for) in the ad? It’s a mystery.

San Francisco’s Temporary Beer Gardens

The Atlantic online had an interesting post on their Cities Places Matter blog entitled San Francisco’s Temporary Beer Garden Takes Off, all about a couple of new beer gardens in the city, one of which is in a temporary space while it waits to be developed.

BrewDog Vs. CAMRA Humor

March 8, 2012 By Jay Brooks

brew-dog
Regardless of which side you’re on in the mock feud between BrewDog and CAMRA (The Campaign For Real Ale), this is pretty funny. James Watt of BrewDog just tweeted this hilarious poster portraying the two sides. I don’t know who created it, but it’s priceless.

Beer In Ads #558: Vigor & Strength In Every Drop

March 7, 2012 By Jay Brooks

Wednesday’s ad is Rainier Beer, from the Seattle Brewing & Malting Co. Like the other Rainier ad I’ve featured, For Pure Drink, it’s from the early years of the 20th century, probably in the first decade. It’s a simple ad showing a beautiful woman holding up a dainty glass of beer while leaning on a giant bottle of Rainier. And I love the message, which would be illegal in a beer ad today; “There’s New Vigor and Strength in Every Drop.”
